Proverbs 28:19 – 20 – ‘He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.’
Working results in having food in abundance, while being faithful results in rich blessing. Is it a surprise to you that God’s word indicates that he who works will have abundant food? Not just enough to live on or enough for oneself and the family. No, it says abundant food. As in, there is more than enough to go around. In fact, there is left over so that you can share with others and store away! We should work to earn our keep and know that it will lead to blessing others.
The other side of this verse indicates that the person who chases fantasies will have their fill of poverty. Because they are running after unlikely ideas, they will find themselves lacking. And if they are lacking, then there is no way they will be able to provide for others!
If we work hard, we find ourselves with more than enough. On top of this, if we seek God wholeheartedly, then we will be richly blessed. What a wonderful thing!
The second half of the second verse indicates that the person who is eager to get rich will not go unpunished. Now it doesn’t specify what this punishment will be. However, I believe if a person is eager to get rich – then this comes before their love of God. The punishment here is an eternity without God.
Being a wealthy Christian isn’t a bad thing. But you need to put God first and be willing to work, in spite of the riches you may have acquired in your life. Remember, if you work, then you’ll have abundant food and that will allow you to bless others and plan for your future.
