Proverbs 16: 16 – 17 – ‘Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil. Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred.’
Priorities. Every person should have them. It is no different for the wealthy Christian. God first, family and then all else. It’s up to you to determine where your priorities lie, but know that God should be at the top of the list.
Better a Little
God’s word indicates that a little with fear of the Lord is better than great wealth. It doesn’t indicate that we shouldn’t be wealthy. Instead, it points out that the person who fears God and has little is better off than the person with wealth and no respect for God. I believe this shows that we need to prioritise our relationship with God above all else. Who knows how He will bless your finances once you have this area of your life right?
If we have fear of the Lord, then we will appreciate what is important to Him. Love. The next verse indicates that a simple meal with love is better than one that is extravagant and lacking love. If we fear the Lord, then we should love His children.
If it so happens that God has blessed us with abundant finances, then we should be using these to love His children. Provide first for your family and don’t forget to teach them to fear the Lord. Then, with what you have spare, look into reaching out to others. Remember to be thankful for what you have. Also remember to be thankful for a little and to continue to fear the Lord. If you have more than enough, then seek to bless others with it.
Wealth tip – establish the difference between needs and wants. Do you need your next purchase? Can the money be better invested elsewhere?
