Ecclesiastes 11:2 – ‘Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.’
It is a wise person who doesn’t invest all their finances in one area. And why? Because we do not know what the future brings. Only God can know that. As it says in Ecclesiastes, we should look for opportunities to give portions to seven, even to eight different areas. In other words, spread your investments out.
Perhaps you can start by putting your savings into an account that earns interest. As this builds over time, you can look at putting some of this – or future savings you acquire – into another form of investment. Maybe shares, maybe real estate or some in a term deposit that will earn higher interest but be untouchable for a time.
Give Portions to Seven
I remember the recent global financial crisis. Family members the generation above me lost a lot of money in their super. More money than I could earn working full time for a couple of years teaching. Ouch! In fact, one of my older relatives had to go back to work part time as their super wasn’t going to be enough to live on. We just cannot know what tomorrow will bring financially. But, we can look at our finances today and choose where to invest them.
As your finances allow, branch out a little with regards to your investments. First goals should include decreasing debt and increasing savings, but from here, it’s up to you how you invest your savings.
Financial tip – meal plan; organising what you will cook each week or month will help you to utilise what you have bought, rather than leave food unused in cupboards and buy other things.
