Proverbs 3:9 – 10 – ‘Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.’
Who doesn’t want this, seriously? How wonderful to know that you’re abundantly blessed, have more than you need and can bless others?
There is such a simple act of obedience that we need to carry out in order to receive this – honouring God with our firstfruits. For me, this often links in with money. There is a set amount each week that my husband and I put into the offering at church. This doesn’t have to be the only place we offer our first fruits, however.
Although often it is related to money these days – and the amount of us who have crops are dwindling! – we can honour God with the firstfruits of our time, our praise, our energy and so much more.
When I awake each morning currently, I must eat – pregnancy related – and whilst I have my breakfast and the rest of the household is usually asleep, I enjoy the quiet time to have a cuppa and read the daily chapters and verses for my One Year Bible. This is after I’ve opened my eyes and offered up the Prayer of Jabez to the Lord.
I’ve started my day with a conversation with God and read his word – offering Him the first of my time before I tend to the needs of my family, thinking about what I want to do for the day and find other distractions.
I pray that my eyes will be open to opportunities daily where I can offer my first fruits and shine God’s light for others.
I want to grow in my knowledge of God and consequently in the way that I can be an effective child of God. This can quite simply come from reading God’s word on a daily basis and learning to be obedient to what it says, as in Proverbs 3:9 – 10.
