I was recently listening to a song on the radio. It was one that I knew but hadn’t heard for awhile. And with it is a message that I often forget – but should remember daily: Let it start with me.
The singer talks of a fallen world and things that are wrong in it. Do you see that? I feel it can be easy as Christians to feel that life’s problems could be lessened, if only… If only he would give more into the church offering. If only she would be nicer to those in need. If only they would raise their children better… it’s a cop out to feel that the world would be a better place if someone else were to pick up their game.
The only person we can influence greatly – and the only person we ever will – is ourselves. In the movie Amazing Grace, William Wilberforce is talking with his best friend, Will Pitt. Will is talking about the two of them getting into parliament and being able to change the world together. He asks Wilberforce, “Don’t you believe we could change the world?” William’s quiet reply is, “I would change myself, first.”
When we want to see more giving, more love, more grace, more of anything that represents God, we should look to ourselves first. As a wealthy Christian with influence in whatever capacity you have, let this be your prayer: let it start with me, Lord.
