Deuteronomy 26:12 – ‘When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.’
Whether or not you tithe as a Christian, chances are you’re familiar with the tithe. This involves setting aside a tenth of your income. God used this practice to provide for those who couldn’t provide for themselves.
Perhaps they were a foreigner and so not able to gain work or were just new to the area. Perhaps they dedicated their waking hours to serving God and so didn’t earn a wage. Perhaps they were provided for by a husband or father and he is now gone.
Setting Aside a Tenth
As wealthy Christians, we too can provide for these people and others in need. If you don’t already, make the habit of setting aside a tenth of your income. Hopefully you already set aside as much for saving! Now set aside an amount to invest in helping those who aren’t so fortunate as to have an income or someone to provide for them.
It’s between you and God whom you set aside this amount for. Perhaps there is a particular cause (or causes) you feel passionate about. Maybe there’s someone in your church or down the road from you that God has put on your heart. Whoever it is, rest in the fact that you have put aside for them and that you are more than able to bless them because God has blessed you.
Financial tip – meal plan; organising what you will cook each week or month will help you to utilise what you have bought, rather than leave food unused in cupboards and buy other things.
