Proverbs 22:9 – ‘A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.’
This is such a simple verse! It says that if we share with those who are lacking, then we will be blessed. Note that it doesn’t say – if you have more than enough, share with the poor.
Far from it! It just indicates that the person who shares their food with someone in need is generous. And how much more generous is it, if you are sharing when you have just enough for yourself? Do you the remember widow who gave all that she had rather than a little from her abundance? Jesus said she was the most generous giver of all. We should challenge ourselves to be like this – even as wealthy Christians.
Don’t give out of your abundance but rather, challenge yourself to give until it costs you. Remember David’s example of buying property that was offered to him for free. He refused to offer something to the Lord that hadn’t cost him.
Shares his Food
Consider how you can share. The person who always seems to have a negative thing to say to you? Shower them with encouragement and smiles. The picky eater who struggles to say the right thing in public? Invite them over for a meal you know they’ll love. Be the person who shares his food with the poor. Look for ways to be generous – even if they are going to cost you your time, finances or pride. Embrace opportunities to share with others. You will be blessed because of it.
Financial tip – establish the difference between needs and wants. Do you need your next purchase? Can the money be better invested elsewhere?
