Proverbs 11:28 – ‘Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.’

Trust. What do you trust in? The bible says, whoever trusts in his riches will fall. This is in and of itself an interesting statement. If we put our faith in our finances, then we will find that over time, we are destined for a fall.

God wants us to place our trust in Him. When you think about it, surely we should acknowledge that our riches come from Him anyway? Trust in the provider, not the provision.

Whoever Trusts in His Riches Will Fall, but the Righteous will Thrive like a Green Leaf

Whoever Trusts in His Riches Will Fall, but the Righteous will Thrive like a Green Leaf

This verse doesn’t end after fall. It is followed with a but. But the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. What does the colour green mean to you? To me green resembles growth, multiplication, living. It is a good thing!

What about the word thrive? Synonyms for thrive include flourish, prosper, succeed, blossom, increase. When you place thrive and green together, it seems the focus point is growing and prospering under God’s care!

There are two distinct points to this verse. One, we must not trust in riches that God has blessed us with. Choose instead to trust in the One who provided them to you. Two, if we follow righteous living – God’s way of life – then we will find ourselves with prosperity.

Perhaps we could look at the verse as if the two statements were reversed. One, following God’s way will lead to thriving in this world. However, we must not trust in these riches, otherwise it will lead to our downfall.
